We are going to listen to an exclusive

cutting room from clip from our third

31

:

everyday icon this season, Becs.

32

:

So are you ready, Radiant Icons?

33

:

Because your tea time

sesh is starting now.

34

:

I feel like as You You know,

we've grown up acting, right?

35

:

Up till now to this point, like, I

feel like the industry has gotten a

36

:

little bit more accepting of everyone.

37

:

Like, I feel like it's more inclusive.

38

:

I think that's the right way to say it.

39

:

Like, it's, the industry has gotten

more inclusive whether that's Yeah.

40

:

Body positivity, so on and so forth,

like, I think there was that human

41

:

element that was missing when we

just, like, had started, you know?

42

:

To break

43

:

Becs: it down for everybody, we were

starting our entertainment careers

44

:

when America's Next Top Model was

on, and size 4 women were being

45

:

told that they were morbidly obese.

46

:

Yeah,

47

:

Amanda Paolicelli: yeah, no, that

was And I looked up to America's Next

48

:

Top Model, though, that's the thing,

that's so crazy, like, Tyra Banks was

49

:

like, my My girl, like I loved her.

50

:

I loved America's Next Top Model.

51

:

Like, I don't, I probably

have said this on the podcast.

52

:

Like, let's be so for real, I would

practice walking on the runway and

53

:

like being like, do, do, do, do

I'm a four 11 girl with curves.

54

:

I'm a curvy woman.

55

:

Curvy and short.

56

:

But like, Tyra was saying that

I had to look a certain way,

57

:

and that's what I thought.

58

:

And that contributed to a lot

of like, my self esteem and

59

:

like, my body image issues.

60

:

A main part of it was Watching TV

and watching the shows like America's

61

:

Next Top Model and not looking like

any of them, whether it was my height

62

:

or my weight, I never truly felt like

I was gonna belong in the industry.

63

:

And maybe that's why I was like, you

know what, I need to step back because it

64

:

was no longer It's no longer fun trying

for me because I was getting rejected so

65

:

much and rejection is a big part of it.

66

:

Whether we're acting or whether

we're content creators, right, or

67

:

influencers, however you want to label

us, rejection is a big part of it.

68

:

So how do you deal with rejection?

69

:

Becs: Not well, I can tell you that much.

70

:

Amanda Paolicelli: Yeah, no, we

definitely don't deal with it well.

71

:

I already knew the

answer, but you know what?

72

:

Let's just, let's just talk about it.

73

:

Like,

74

:

Becs: it's not

75

:

Amanda Paolicelli: fun, but let's

76

:

Becs: talk about it.

77

:

Along with, like, some of, you know,

my mental health stuff that I, I

78

:

have, um, going on which, it's not

what this podcast episode is about.

79

:

Um, but, it's, it's hard for me to

Accept rejection and it, it hurts a

80

:

little bit more like when it's something,

obviously it's going to hurt more when

81

:

it's something that you really wanted.

82

:

Um, but I remember the first time that I

was turned down and told no for a role.

83

:

It was my freshman year of high school and

I was going to a performing arts school.

84

:

So everybody there was, you know, in

the field and I had auditioned for the

85

:

spring musical, which was, um, Cinderella

and I'm not the best singer, but I, you

86

:

know, I got into the school every show

that I had auditioned for beforehand.

87

:

I had gotten in, I auditioned for the

fall show and I got in, I was thinking

88

:

like maybe a nice ensemble role.

89

:

And I remember opening a The letter,

because it was an actual letter this time.

90

:

Wow, what?

91

:

I've never heard of that.

92

:

Wow.

93

:

Okay.

94

:

Yeah, it was like, you went, like, as

you were leaving for the buses, you

95

:

would like stop and pick up your letter.

96

:

Wait, Bex, you're younger than

97

:

Amanda Paolicelli: me.

98

:

Like, you're literally not

by much, everyone, okay?

99

:

I'm not, I'm not that old.

100

:

I'm literally 25, and like,

Vex is like, you're 23, right?

101

:

23?

102

:

Yeah.

103

:

You just turned 23, right?

104

:

Okay.

105

:

Yeah, we're doing this

before our birthdays.

106

:

I just

107

:

Becs: turned 23.

108

:

I'm turning 24, like, next month.

109

:

I know, I know, I know.

110

:

But yes, no, I did just turn 23.

111

:

I'm actually, I'm actually, I, I

didn't get to, to vote this year.

112

:

I'm a child.

113

:

Amanda Paolicelli: Yeah, literally.

114

:

We're so young and out of the womb.

115

:

I'm a mom.

116

:

But I'm so,

117

:

Becs: I'm, I'm brand new.

118

:

I was born last week.

119

:

Amanda Paolicelli: No, literally.

120

:

That's why I look so good.

121

:

But like, I, I'm older than

you by like a year or two.

122

:

And like, I never ever heard

of like a physical letter.

123

:

So that is mind blowing to me, but okay.

124

:

Anyway, not the point of the story, but

like, please, I just had to say that.

125

:

That's like so mind blowing.

126

:

Okay.

127

:

Okay.

128

:

Becs: Yeah.

129

:

It was, a weird thing.

130

:

Like usually they'll put

up like the call list.

131

:

Yeah, like you see that

in a bunch of like, yeah.

132

:

My school, I think it was because it was

specifically performing arts that they

133

:

gave letters so everybody could open them

in private and it wasn't a big thing.

134

:

That's actually a

135

:

Amanda Paolicelli: good point.

136

:

That's a good point.

137

:

Yeah.

138

:

Becs: Yeah, so I got my letter and I

walked out and I was opening it with

139

:

my friend and I remember she opened

hers and she looked at it and then she

140

:

was like, oh, well, what is your say?

141

:

And I opened mine and it said,

we do not have a role for you.

142

:

And I was like, I remember like,

my face fell, like, I just felt

143

:

completely drained in that moment

because it was the first time that

144

:

I had ever experienced a rejection.

145

:

And no, we don't have a role for you.

146

:

No, you're not going to be in this one.

147

:

Like.

148

:

And it was, it was,

149

:

it was learning at 14 years old

how to deal with that gracefully.

150

:

Because now you have a whole

bunch of other people around you.

151

:

Spoiler, everybody

around me also got a no.

152

:

And like, having to, to be like, Oh,

well, you know, there's always next time.

153

:

Like, there's next year.

154

:

We can do it next year.

155

:

Because you don't want to be

that one person that's like,

156

:

Well, why didn't I get cast?

157

:

Yeah, and it's so easy to do that.

158

:

Yeah.

159

:

Mm hmm.

160

:

Yeah.

161

:

And it's like, oh, well, I deserve

the role more than you, like,

162

:

because you didn't, you know.

163

:

Amanda Paolicelli: I get that.

164

:

No, I totally do.

165

:

So what has it taught you about yourself

and how do you stay motivated to keep

166

:

pushing forward towards that one yes?

167

:

Becs: So obviously it's, it's been a

couple years since that first rejection

168

:

and there have been a lot more after.

169

:

Um, I never got to do a

musical at the school.

170

:

Guess what?

171

:

I'm not a singer.

172

:

It kind of makes sense, you know?

173

:

So, um, there, there were definitely a

lot more rejections that followed that one

174

:

and some of them were harder than others.

175

:

Um, and some of them

weren't even a complete no.

176

:

Like, I auditioned for

Alice in Wonderland.

177

:

I was hoping to get the role of Alice,

and I got the White Queen instead.

178

:

Um, and I also got to be

Humpty Dumpty a couple times.

179

:

That was, that was fun.

180

:

Um, but it was,

181

:

it was making the best out of that role.

182

:

And that was one of the roles that my

acting teacher had told me that the

183

:

character that I am bringing to it

specifically is, like, the little bit

184

:

of me that I brought, what I had to

offer the character of the White Queen.

185

:

Like, lit up the stage,

basically, is what he told me.

186

:

And he could have just been saying

that to make me feel better.

187

:

But I feel like that helped a lot

with understanding that there's

188

:

going to be a lot of no's, but the

yeses that you get are going to be

189

:

that much sweeter because of it.

190

:

You know, like, don't, just because

it's not going the way that you

191

:

anticipated doesn't mean that it's not.

192

:

Going the way that it's supposed to.

193

:

Period.

194

:

Amanda Paolicelli: Cause we're

exactly where we're meant to be.

195

:

Even if it doesn't feel like it, everyone.

196

:

We are exactly where we're supposed

to be cause we gotta trust that path.

197

:

Like, we trust an Uber.

198

:

Point Lincoln, period.

199

:

Becs: The rejections, they,

they, they still hurt.

200

:

Every once in a while.

201

:

Like, you know, my, my dream

company to work for right now.

202

:

And every time I send something

and I go, And they go, no,

203

:

Amanda Paolicelli: they say,

not yet, not yet, because it's

204

:

coming for you, you know, stop.

205

:

Oh my God.

206

:

No, it's going to happen, Becs.

207

:

It is like you said, like

it's going to happen.

208

:

Becs: I'm not going to give up.

209

:

Yeah.

210

:

Eventually they are going to hire

me because eventually there's going

211

:

to be a role that I am perfect for.

212

:

And they're going to have

to finally give me a yes.

213

:

Period.

214

:

Yes.

215

:

All of the rejection in the past is

not going to matter at that point.

216

:

Amanda Paolicelli: Exactly.

217

:

Because

218

:

Becs: I got, you know, something, and if

I just give up, then I'll never get a yes.

219

:

And it'll just be that history of

no's that I'm stuck with, you know?

220

:

And that's not, that's not good for me.

221

:

Yeah.

222

:

I'm not okay with just getting

a no and then giving up.

223

:

Yeah, that's not you.

224

:

I'm eventually going to just hear

a yes, a congratulations, uh,

225

:

I have this for you, you know?
